We spent the morning at Alcatraz, with a quick stop at the USS Pampanito submarine, then wandered up to Lombard Street to marvel at the crazy zig zag hill. Walking from there to City Lights bookstore, we stopped to pay our respects to the burned down shell of Rogue’s SF outpost and cursed the arsonists.
We grabbed a cab from Chinatown to take the teens to Haight Ashbury. Once the centre of the sixties’ counter-cultural scene and home to hippies, tie dye, peace and love, Haight Ashbury is now more of a tourist trap – it certainly trapped our girl teen into coughing up $50 for a slip of a sequinned skirt, “perfect for Reading” apparently.
Us old folks took ourselves to Magnolia Pub & Brewery to recover. A beautiful and distinctive corner building, the place was packed with locals. Most of the space is reserved for dining customers, with bar seating and one big shared table. An interesting selection of beers was available, but we only had time for one each here (and forgot to take photos).
Coming to the end of our SF stay, what we have noticed is that even the smallest of grocery shops in SF has a great selection of craft beer, and the burger bars too; we went to Super Duper Burger and even they sold Racer 8 IPA on draught, as did The Firewood Cafe where we had a lovely meal on our last night in SF. Turns out that what we thought was a great neighbourhood eatery in Castro has two other branches, both at the airports so perhaps not as cool as we thought!
